However, if you change the orientation of the label so you can see text/graphics up- gright on screen but the actual print will be rotated, you may need to choose the opposite setting for the label size. In many cases you will choose the same size for both. Important Note: The page size is not the same setting as the label size. We will need to adjust the page size and the margins. (Do not choose from the “Labels” category!) Choose either blank landscape or portrait. ![]() When you open the software for the first time you will be asked to choose a Template. Below is a tutorial on how to setup a label using Swift Publisher by Belight. Believe me, for Mac it’s really great! Must have any way.Swift Publisher is an inexpensive software that can be used to design/layout and print your labels if you are using a Primera label printer attached to a Mac. In conclusion, this review doesn’t cover all the features and tools of Swift Publisher, but what I wanted to do is to impart my impressions of an experienced user. It may become indispensable both for beginners and advanced desktop publishing users. In my experience, Swift Publisher is handy, multipurpose, and captivating in use. If you are trying to imagine a kind of replacement for Adobe Indesign on your Mac, here’s an excellent option for you. So, as for me, even a quick review of this publishing software provoked interest and desire to try more with it. If you want to insert your own pictures into the poster, it’ll be easy to do and there’ll be no problems with processing it due to the smart program filters. If the attracting capacity of your product is a high priority (for example, you need a poster for a movie, and it has to be spectacular and surely eye-catching), Swift Publisher can offer an extra-pack of wonderful images (over 40,000 items, to be precise), but that’s not all. Now you’ll be able to make it easy and fast.Īgain, I’d like to say a word about image library. In case you don’t have time for a sophisticated layout and first need some tutorial before the next step, Swift Publisher will accompany you through the process of editing and publishing your document, so forget about the old unreadable manuals – you can replace them with the clear instructions of the Swift Publisher. Now I have it examined and can reassure that your identical colors will be transferred completely undamaged. I mean its color system device supporting CMYK. Just tick it, and your past torment will actually go into the past!Īnother feature of the desktop publisher for your Mac is ready to be launched. Once more you have an alternative with Swift Publisher, as it has a special tool called “Bleeds”. ![]() In the majority of cases, you face all these challenges with the white edges on the pages of your creation. When you deal with posters and flyers, you sometimes have to publish a huge amount of them, so most frequently you go to a print shop. Most of all, I liked the flowing text boxes option, because it is essential for multiple pages booklets. Making up my own text styles, putting them ordinarily, vertically, whatever I liked, into the pages was a nice opportunity to create a product that looks smart and professional. I enjoyed its elegant simplicity while editing texts and composing pages into quite the thing I needed. This function is achieved thanks to the program’s well thought-out design which can be mastered even by the beginner without difficulty, so to speak, intuitively. The key feature of the layout and printing with Swift Publisher is its ease of operation. Moreover, this is not the exact thing that wins you. With its wide spectrum of printed document types available, as well as vast quantities of clipart images and image masks, this software may surprise even those well-versed in publishing. With this little comment I don’t intend to be a great reviewer – I just want to share my impressions on working with this layout and print utility for Mac.Īs booklets and brochures are the day-to-day job for my Mac, I checked first the program creation tools and templates library and admired the choice of more than 500 options. Purchasing my Swift Publisher app, I expected it at least not to be worse alternatively, I got something even better. Is there any alternative for Adobe Indesign for Mac? I dare say, yes. ![]()

![]() ![]() They have shown promise as anti-anxiety and stress-relief aids in the very young and the very old. "It's almost like I have feelings in the dream. It's this mystery that still largely colors weighted blankets as non-evidence-based folk remedies to sleep disorders. No one knows precisely what goes on in the brain and throughout the body under this kind of pressure whether the mechanism is mere placebo, or if something else altogether makes lying under a weighted blanket feel so reassuring and safe that it could bring deep, restorative sleep to those who need it but can't otherwise get it on their own. (It's generally accepted that a weighted blanket should be at least 10 percent the person's body weight.) There is also speculation that lying under heavy constant pressure such as a weighted blanket feels good because it somehow lights up the brain's reward center, probably triggering the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.īut that's about the extent of our understanding of the science beneath weighted blankets. According to Gaby Badre, a leading sleep researcher who's studied weighted blanket therapy for treating insomnia in adults, there is good reason to believe this is because the deep pressure touch of a weighted material spread over part or all of the body dials down the fight-or-flight arousals of the sympathetic nervous system. Petrulis compares it to a firm, comforting hug. The underlying idea is dead simple: create a cocooning embrace, like being swaddled. Whatever it is, can heavy blankets help other veterans with combat-related sleep problems get some rest too? What about restless deployed troops? Can heavy blankets offer them relief? What happens, exactly, while he's under such pressure? It sounds almost too good to be true. The pockets are each stuffed with polypropylene pellets and a sort of memory foam material. The blanket is roughly 3 feet wide by 6 feet long and looks a bit like 60 or so 4 x 4 inch bean bags handstitched together. Three or four nights a week, after tucking himself in bed, Petrulis slides a prototype 17-pound weighted blanket over his sheets. "It got really, really bad," Petrulis, now 31, tells me. But mostly he was too afraid to close his eyes. Sometimes he'd drink on the couch until he passed out. He was running on fumes, getting only two or three fitful hours of sleep each night. The VA ultimately declared him a 90 percent disabled veteran. But he was still functional in the sense that he could eat and go to the bathroom on his own. The VA rated his disabilities at a combined 140 percent, with PTSD, which his life now revolves around, accounting for 70 percent of that rating. ![]() The VA diagnosed Petrulis with traumatic brain injury, severe post-traumatic stress disorder, tinnitus, Achilles and kneecap tendonitis, and depression. Dendritic spines are small structures that receive inputs from the axons of other neurons. The soma (tree trunk) is where the nucleus lies, where the neuron’s DNA is housed, and where proteins are made to be transported throughout the axon and dendrites. Functionally, it carries electrical impulses and projects to synapses with dendrites or cell bodies of other neurons or with non-neuronal targets such as muscle fibers. The axon (tree roots) is the output structure of the neuron when a neuron wants to talk to another neuron, it sends an electrical message called an action potential throughout the entire axon. In size, the axon may represent over 95 of the total volume of the neuron. Dendrites branch as they move towards their tips, just like tree branches do, and they even have leaf-like structures on them called spines. A dendrite (tree branch) is where a neuron receives input from other cells. A neuron has three main parts: dendrites, an axon, and a cell body or soma (see image below), which can be represented as the branches, roots and trunk of a tree, respectively. What does a neuron look like?Ī useful analogy is to think of a neuron as a tree. The creation of new neurons in the brain is called neurogenesis, and this can happen even in adults. Having said that, our roughly 100 billion neurons do interact closely with other cell types, broadly classified as glia (these may actually outnumber neurons, although it’s not really known). More than that, their interactions define who we are as people. Neurons (also called neurones or nerve cells) are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, the cells responsible for receiving sensory input from the external world, for sending motor commands to our muscles, and for transforming and relaying the electrical signals at every step in between. Dendrites are also covered with synapses. ![]() ![]() To make the final side of the shelf brackets, use a miter saw to cut the 1″x2″ board to 5.5″ long, with a 45-degree angle cut along each side to form a trapezoid as shown in the photo below. All of these are highly specialized applications offering dedicated solutions for specific building types such as airports (Figure 2), train stations, stadiums, concert venues, etc. In addition to these applications, I also discovered other pedestrian simulation tools I was not previously aware of including Pedestrian Dynamics, AnyLogic, SimWalk, and PTV Viswalk. We are also starting to see pedestrian simulation in an infrastructure design tool like InfraWorks, which added a “mobility simulation” capability in its 2017 release to analyze not just the movement of vehicles in a proposed road design but also pedestrians, bikes, taxis, buses, and other modes of transportation (see AECbytes Newsletter #80). ![]() SimTread has been recently been expanded by its Japanese developer to simulate whole city evacuations during natural disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes, as I reported in my 2017 article, Flood Forecasting Technology. Another tool is SimTread, a plug-in to Vectorworks for analyzing pedestrian traffic flow. In addition to LEGION, one of the most well-known pedestrian simulation tools in AEC that I am aware of is MassMotion from Oasys, an update on which was provided in AECbytes Newsletter #76. ![]() Given the growing importance of the need to design buildings to better address the mobility needs of the people who use it, the use of pedestrian simulation software is becoming critical. 3D simulation of egress from a stadium in LEGION. In recent years, we sadly also have to design buildings to improve egress in the event of a bomb threat, mass shooting, or terrorist attack, and not just for an emergency like a fire or an earthquake.įigure 1. In the same way, simulating pedestrians can help building designers streamline foot traffic, avoid congestion, control crowds, and improve evacuations in the event of an emergency, especially in large and heavily trafficked public buildings such as airports, train stations, stadiums, and concert halls where people congregate (Figure 1). Thus, we need crash simulations to better determine how to design automobiles to minimize injuries and casualties, earthquake simulations to better design our structures to withstand them and minimize damage, traffic simulations to improve traffic flow, weather simulations to improve forecasting, energy simulations to design more sustainable and comfortable buildings, and so on. In fact, this is true for most events that we need to understand better to determine how to design in response to them. The need for pedestrian simulation software is a no-brainer. Let’s start by looking at the field of pedestrian simulation software in general and then at LEGION in particular, including the science behind it. Not only did I learn more about LEGION, how it is currently being used, and the plans for its future development, I was also able to get a better understanding of the technology of pedestrian simulation by researching it from a broader perspective and delving deeper into how it is implemented. How, then, does pedestrian simulation actually work? How can acts such as walking, or even driving, by human beings, be predicted? I was motivated to delve deeper into this topic after attending a presentation on LEGION at the YII 2018 conference by the founder and head of the company, Douglas Connor. I find the concept of pedestrian simulation extremely fascinating, because unlike other simulations such as structure or energy that are grounded in scientific properties and natural laws-for example, the rate of flow of an inanimate object in a specific context, as in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), can be calculated with exact precision-pedestrian simulation is dealing with human beings who have a mind of their own and are unpredictable. One of the key acquisitions that Bentley announced at its recent Year in Infrastructure (YII) 2018 Conference was LEGION for pedestrian simulation. ![]() |
